Q2 What Should I Do to Make a Good Shopify Website?

If you don’t know, Shopify is a great platform to start your first eCommerce business.

FIRST - make sure you have a good product that people want to buy. Check out my previous video entitled “What are the suggested products that could be sold online?”

  1. Understand Your Customer

The first thing you should do to make a good Shopify website is understand your customer.

Now, let’s take a look at an existing Shopify websites to answer this question in a little more detail:

From the current hero image on the homepage, I do not know who the customer is! I can’t tell who this website is appealing to. If you want to make a good shopify site you must know your target customer and consider them before you make any website decision.

With this Shopify site: it’s not 100% clear what the site is selling until you scroll down. The hero image text is hard to read and the images are not good quality - they don’t clearly display the customer or the product. I would recommend this person use a picture of their ideal customer wearing some of the products in the hero image with a simple headline: ‘Get clothing inspired by your favourite books.’ CTA: Buy Now and onramp ‘A portion of every sale made goes to the Pajama Program Charity’ CTA: Find Out More.

If you know your customer you can instantly connect with them by using language that relates to them and images that resonate with them. Make sure you are clear - who is your customer, what age are they, why are they coming to my site - is it mainly for hoodies, or is it the book-inspired vintage dresses. Once you know this stuff you can make a hero image that instantly grabs the attention of your ideal customer. If you don’t know this stuff - grab one of your customers and interview them in exchange for a freebie!

  1. Have a Clear Call to Action

If we look at MAC cosmetics website, we can see exactly what they want us to do in the homepage hero image. They have three women with different skin types, each wearing a matte lipstick and the button reads ‘shop your matte.’ The product page then continues to display matte lipstick on various skin types.

Here is another Shopify site:

In the main hero image it’s still not entirely clear what the product is. The aeroplane is not displayed as jewellery and I would have someone wear it as a necklace. The call to action is again - confusing. The first thing they want the customer to do is ‘read their story.’ What this website is forgetting is that your online store needs to be customer focused. The customer does not necessarily care about why you setup your store - they do care about what’s in it for them. I would create a clear call to action - perhaps a picture of their bestselling necklace and a call to action ‘buy it now.’ You can also create an onramp ‘find out how it’s made’ and tell your story in a way that appeals to customers - listing all of the customer benefits.


  1. Do Not Be Confusing

Don’t over-clutter your website! Don’t bombard them with a whole bunch of products - keep your website simple, sell products under one market. This stops overwhelm which sure puts prospects off!


In short - you need to think about the customer journey on every single page of your website. Be ultra-clear, super simple and give each prospect clear benefits of shopping with you.
